Volunteers
YouthFriends volunteers are caring adult role models from the community who volunteer with young people in schools, grades K-12. The goal is to help students achieve success, both academically and socially.
Being a YouthFriend is fun, flexible and it makes a difference. YouthFriends volunteers spend 30-60 minutes a week mentoring a student. YouthFriends accommodates your interests and schedule by allowing you to select the day, time and school location that is convenient for you. All YouthFriends volunteers complete an
application
and are carefully screened and trained.
Students
YouthFriends is open to all students in participating school districts. Student selection is not based on academic or socio-economic levels and is open to every student grades K-12. Students may request a YouthFriend or be recommended or referred by a school staff member or a parent. All YouthFriends activities occur on school grounds and during school hours.
Proven Succeess
A study among Kansas City young people revealed that a key thing young people want is the involvement of more caring adults in their lives. Additionally, national studies document that young people with mentors show an improvement in attitude and are more likely to stay in school, achieve and aspire to better grades and go on to college.
